Comprehensive Women’s Health Services & Primary Care
Your primary care provider is central to your healthcare within the VA system. They can provide or coordinate most of your healthcare needs. For women, this includes comprehensive women’s health services integrated directly into primary care, such as:
- Well-woman exams: Routine check-ups focused on preventive care and overall health maintenance for women.
- Pap smears and pelvic exams: Essential screenings for cervical cancer and other gynecological health issues.
- Breast care: Clinical breast exams and mammography referrals to ensure proactive breast health management.
- Birth control and family planning: A range of contraceptive options and counseling services to support your reproductive choices.
- Menopause management: Care and support to navigate the physical and emotional changes associated with menopause.
- Mental health care: Integrated mental health services to address conditions like depression, anxiety, and PTSD, recognizing the unique experiences of women veterans.
- Substance use disorder treatment: Confidential and effective programs to help women veterans overcome addiction.
- Nutrition counseling and weight management: Personalized guidance to support healthy eating habits and achieve weight management goals.

Specialized Care Tailored to Women Veterans
Beyond primary care, the VA provides access to a variety of specialty services to address more specific health needs. These include:
- Gynecological and Fertility Treatment: Specialized gynecological care, including management of complex conditions and access to fertility evaluations and treatments.
- Sensory Aids and Prosthetics: Provision of necessary aids, including gender-specific items such as post-mastectomy prostheses and bras, ensuring comfort and dignity.
- Radiology, Neurology, and Cardiology: Access to advanced diagnostic imaging and specialist care for conditions affecting the brain, nerves, and heart.
- Orthopedics, Rheumatology, and Endocrinology: Specialized care for musculoskeletal issues, autoimmune diseases, and hormonal imbalances, which can disproportionately affect women.
- Oncology: Comprehensive cancer care, including screening, diagnosis, treatment, and support services.
Are You Utilizing Your Earned Health Benefits?
It’s important for every woman Veteran to access the benefits they’ve earned through their service. Currently, only 44% of women Veterans are enrolled in VA health care. This means many women are missing out on comprehensive, low-cost or no-cost healthcare designed specifically for them.
The Women’s Health Transition Training Handbook and the VA Women’s Health Reengagement Training (heaRT) Participant Handbook are excellent resources to understand your benefits, navigate enrollment, and learn more about the specific health concerns of women veterans.
Don’t delay in accessing the healthcare you deserve. It’s never too late to enroll in VA health care services. Take control of your health and explore the comprehensive support available to you.
