SAN ANTONIO, TX (September 21, 2022) – Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas (Toyota Texas) has officially commenced production of the highly anticipated all-new, all-hybrid Toyota Sequoia. This significant milestone marks a new chapter for the iconic SUV, now electrified with a potent hybrid powertrain and proudly built in Texas by Texans.

The third generation Toyota Sequoia emerges as a fully hybrid vehicle, featuring the innovative twin-turbo V6 hybrid i-FORCE Max powertrain. This powerful engine configuration delivers exceptional horsepower and torque, while simultaneously prioritizing fuel efficiency and reducing carbon emissions. This strategic shift to an all-hybrid Sequoia underscores Toyota’s commitment to a sustainable future and meeting the evolving demands of SUV drivers.

“The launch of the third-generation Sequoia represents a pivotal moment in our journey towards carbon neutrality,” stated Kevin Voelkel, president of Toyota Texas. “This all-hybrid SUV not only aligns with our environmental objectives but also exceeds customer expectations for power, performance, and the renowned Sequoia legacy. Toyota Sequoia Finds Its New Texan Home

Toyota’s substantial $391 million investment in the San Antonio plant in 2019 laid the groundwork for Texas to become the exclusive manufacturing hub for both the all-new Tundra and the Sequoia. The 2023 Toyota Sequoia’s production launch signifies a new era of advanced automotive manufacturing at Toyota Texas. Over 3,800 Toyota employees and 5,300 on-site suppliers have dedicated countless hours to prepare for this debut, implementing cutting-edge manufacturing technologies, including advanced laser welding and an enhanced production process to handle the largest single piece of metal ever used by Toyota.

The all-new 2023 Toyota Sequoia is poised to make a strong impression in the full-size SUV market. It boasts a striking new design, a luxurious and comfortable interior, and state-of-the-art technology, perfectly balancing robust performance with enhanced efficiency. Built upon Toyota’s legendary reputation for quality, durability, and reliability, this three-row SUV is engineered to excel in the large SUV segment. The Sequoia will initially be released with the Capstone grade, an exclusive suite of premium features reserved for vehicles manufactured at Toyota Texas, further emphasizing the plant’s significance in Toyota’s North American operations.

Strengthening San Antonio Community Roots

To celebrate the Sequoia’s production commencement in San Antonio, Toyota Texas demonstrated its commitment to the local community by donating a total of $100,000 to the San Antonio River Foundation and the San Antonio Parks Foundation. These contributions will support crucial initiatives focused on tree planting, conservation efforts, and promoting environmental stewardship throughout San Antonio’s south side.

Toyota’s cumulative investment in San Antonio now exceeds $3.1 billion, reflecting the company’s long-term commitment to the region and its workforce.

“We are thrilled that the all-new Toyota Sequoia is being manufactured right here in San Antonio at Toyota’s state-of-the-art facility. This milestone underscores Toyota’s strong confidence in our city and our skilled workforce,” remarked Mayor Ron Nirenberg.

“Having been involved with Toyota’s initial decision to establish operations in San Antonio in 2002,” commented Judge Wolff, “I’ve witnessed firsthand their remarkable corporate leadership over the past two decades. Together with their valued supply partners, Toyota has generated over 7,000 jobs for Bexar County residents. We are delighted to celebrate the local production of the groundbreaking all-hybrid Toyota Sequoia.”
