Free Steering Wheel Locks for Kia and Hyundai Owners in DC to Combat Theft

Car theft in Washington, DC, has become a significant concern, prompting Mayor Muriel Bowser and the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) to take proactive measures. In response to a disturbing social media trend targeting Kia and Hyundai vehicles, the MPD is now offering free Steering Wheel Locks to eligible residents. This initiative aims to deter theft and enhance vehicle security for owners of specific Kia and Hyundai models.

The rise in Kia and Hyundai thefts is linked to a viral social media challenge demonstrating how to steal these vehicles using just a USB cable. This alarming trend has led to a dramatic increase in thefts, causing stress, financial burdens, and safety concerns for residents. Recognizing the urgency, the MPD, in partnership with Kia and Hyundai, is distributing free steering wheel locks to combat this issue directly.

“Car theft is not just an inconvenience; it’s a serious crime that impacts victims significantly and poses risks to public safety,” stated Mayor Bowser. “By providing these free steering wheel locks, we are empowering residents to take a proactive step in protecting their vehicles and preventing theft. We urge all eligible Kia and Hyundai owners in DC to collect their free lock as soon as possible.”

Starting Friday, February 24th, District residents who own a 2011-2021 Kia or Hyundai vehicle with a steel key ignition are eligible to receive a complimentary steering wheel lock. It’s important to note that this offer is for vehicles with a traditional steel key ignition; keyless entry or push-to-start models are not affected by the vulnerability exploited in the social media challenge.

To claim a free steering wheel lock, residents must visit any MPD District station and provide the following:

  • Proof of ownership of a 2011-2021 Hyundai or Kia vehicle.
  • Confirmation that the vehicle uses a steel key ignition.
  • Valid DC vehicle registration.
  • District-issued identification.

Steering wheel locks will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last. Residents can visit any of the following MPD District stations to collect their lock:

  • First District: 101 M Street SW
  • Second District: 3320 Idaho Avenue NW
  • Third District: 1620 V Street NW
  • Fourth District: 6001 Georgia Avenue NW
  • Fifth District: 1805 Bladensburg Road NE
  • Sixth District: 5002 Hayes Street NE
  • Seventh District: 2455 Alabama Ave SE

The data reveals a concerning surge in vehicle thefts in DC. In 2022, there were 3,761 reported motor vehicle thefts, marking an 8% increase from the previous year. The social media trend, which surfaced in the summer of 2022, directly correlates with a spike in thefts involving Hyundai and Kia vehicles. Specifically, incidents involving these makes jumped dramatically from 25 in January 2022 to 150 in December 2022, highlighting the rapid escalation of the problem.

Chief Contee emphasized the broader implications of vehicle theft, stating, “Stolen vehicles are often used in the commission of violent crimes, making this issue a top priority for the MPD. Our goal is to ensure the safety of all residents and visitors by preventing crime and holding offenders accountable.”

Beyond this initiative, the MPD urges all vehicle owners to adopt preventative safety measures, regardless of vehicle make or model. These tips include:

  • Never leave your vehicle unattended while the engine is running.
  • Always turn off the ignition and remove your key fob when leaving your car.
  • Ensure your car doors are locked.
  • Take your keys with you – do not leave spare keys inside the vehicle.
  • Remain vigilant and aware of your surroundings.
  • Park in well-lit areas or secure parking garages whenever possible.
  • Remove USB cables and any valuable accessories from plain sight when your vehicle is parked.
  • Consider investing in additional anti-theft devices for enhanced security.
  • Contact your dealership to inquire about available software updates that may improve vehicle security.
  • Report any suspicious activity immediately by calling 911.

By combining community initiatives like the free steering wheel lock program with individual preventative measures, Washington, DC, aims to tackle the rise in vehicle thefts and create a safer environment for all residents.
