2025 Nissan Kicks Review: A Fresh Take on the Subcompact SUV

This week, we delve into the completely redesigned 2025 Nissan Kicks, a subcompact crossover SUV that’s making waves with its enhanced features and fuel efficiency. This second-generation Kicks has grown in all the right places, adding 2.3 inches in length, 1.6 inches in width, and nearly an inch in height, creating a more substantial presence on the road. Excitingly, the 2025 Kicks breaks tradition by offering available all-wheel drive, a feature previously absent in earlier models.

The model we tested is the top-tier SR trim, but Nissan also offers the more accessible S and SV models, all of which represent remarkable value. Even with the comprehensive upgrades we’re about to explore, the base S model starts at an attractive $21,830, an impressive entry point for a modern SUV in today’s market.

Exterior Styling: Edgy and Modern

The 2025 Kicks boasts a striking new exterior design that exudes a more edgy and contemporary vibe. The LED headlights, deeply integrated into the front fenders, create a distinctive and assertive front fascia. The 19-inch alloy wheels are a standout feature, dramatically enhancing the Kicks’ visual appeal and giving it a more confident stance.

These larger wheels not only improve aesthetics but also contribute to a slightly raised ride height, potentially aiding in easier cabin entry and exit. The Arctic Ice Blue paint, complemented by a black roof and black roof rails, presents a stylish two-tone finish. The SR trim further benefits from LED fog lights and a rear spoiler, adding sporty accents. The redesigned front grille completes the modern look, solidifying the Nissan Kicks as one of the most visually appealing subcompact SUVs available.

Powertrain and Performance: Enhanced Power and Smooth Ride

Significant changes for 2025 extend to what’s under the hood. The previous 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine has been replaced with a more robust 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, boosting horsepower to 141 and, more crucially, increasing torque to 140 pound-feet. This engine is paired with Nissan’s Xtronic Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), which has been refined to offer a more natural driving experience. Nissan has cleverly programmed simulated gear shifts, eliminating the undesirable “rubber band” feeling often associated with older CVTs. Concerns about CVT performance should be put to rest; it’s no longer a point of concern in the 2025 Kicks.

Interior and Technology: Comfort and Innovation

The interior of the 2025 Kicks has also received substantial upgrades. Nissan’s renowned Zero-Gravity seats, inspired by NASA and celebrated for their exceptional comfort, are now featured in the Kicks. The SR model comes with leatherette seats accented by attractive cloth inserts and detailed stitching. These seats offer excellent comfort and subtle bolstering. A premium feature exclusive to the SR trim is the inclusion of Bose speakers integrated directly into the driver’s headrest, enhancing the audio experience.

A new 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster offers excellent readability and features a configurable center display. Large semi-circular gauges on the sides display the tachometer and speedometer. The central area can be customized to show various information, including miles to empty and outside temperature.

Complementing the digital cluster is a larger and user-friendly 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system. This system manages the Bose sound system, vehicle information, settings, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Siri Eyes-Free, and a high-quality backup camera with a 360-degree view. Below the screen are conveniently placed automatic climate controls.

The center console is well-organized, featuring a push-button start, gear shifter, Auto Hold button, electronic emergency brake, and USB ports. While the cupholders are positioned slightly rearward, they are deep enough to accommodate larger drinks. A drive mode selector allows switching between Sport, Standard, and Eco modes.

Rear passenger space is surprisingly generous, particularly in legroom and headroom, thanks to the increased vehicle length. Nissan officially rates the Kicks for five passengers, but realistically, the rear middle seat is best suited for smaller occupants. Rear passengers also benefit from two USB-C ports.

Cargo space is also more substantial than expected, offering 60 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down, and additional under-floor storage. A cargo cover is included to secure valuables.

Features and Options: Well-Equipped and Customizable

The Kicks SR comes standard with a comprehensive suite of features, including remote start, blind spot warning, lane departure warning, lane intervention, high beam assist, automatic emergency braking, rear cross traffic alert, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and Bluetooth.

The test vehicle includes $3,135 in optional upgrades. The $1,950 Premium package adds a Bose 10-speaker sound system, a panoramic sunroof with a power sliding cover, heated front seats and steering wheel, a security system, and a cargo cover. Additional options include splash guards ($250), floor mats ($255), and the 19-inch alloy wheels with premium two-tone paint ($680).

Ride and Drive: Improved Dynamics and Fuel Efficiency

The 2025 Kicks delivers a significantly improved ride quality compared to its predecessor. Steering is responsive and light, and the turning radius is impressively tight, enhancing maneuverability. The Kicks handles surprisingly well for its class, with acceptable levels of interior noise. Visibility is excellent, especially from the driver’s seat.

The new 2.0-liter engine provides noticeably better acceleration, although it’s not designed for blistering speed. However, it offers ample power for everyday driving and highway merging. Fuel economy is a strong point, with EPA ratings of 28 mpg city, 35 mpg highway, and 31 mpg combined.

Verdict: Top of its Class for Value and Features

The total MSRP for the fully equipped 2025 Kicks SR as tested is $30,705, representing exceptional value in today’s SUV market. While the subcompact SUV segment is competitive, the Nissan Kicks stands out for its attractive styling, extensive features, and overall value proposition, making it a top contender in its class.
