Lamborghini, a name synonymous with high-octane performance and breathtaking speed, has once again pushed the boundaries of automotive engineering. While the idea of track-focused SUVs might seem counterintuitive to some, for Lamborghini, it’s simply in their nature to continually elevate performance. The Lamborghini Urus Performante is a testament to this ethos, proving that an SUV can deliver exhilarating track experiences and mind-blowing acceleration. Buckle up as we delve into what makes this performance SUV truly exceptional, especially its astonishing Lamborghini SUV 0-60 time.
Driving an SUV at breakneck speeds around a racetrack might initially raise eyebrows, but the Lamborghini Urus Performante is engineered to defy expectations. During our time at Roebling Road Raceway, with its demanding nine turns, the Urus Performante felt remarkably agile and car-like, a far cry from the typical SUV driving experience. The ease with which we could confidently push this SUV into corners was genuinely surprising, all while enjoying a commanding driving position and blistering straight-line speed.
This isn’t Lamborghini’s first foray with the Urus at Roebling Road. Five years prior, the original Urus graced the same track. Now, the Performante iteration arrives with significant aerodynamic enhancements. The front fascia is redesigned with larger air intakes for improved cooling, complemented by air curtains that effectively channel airflow over the front wheels. A reshaped carbon fiber hood not only reduces drag but also contributes to weight reduction. Further aerodynamic downforce is generated by a new front splitter, a roofline wing, and a revised hatch spoiler, all working in harmony to enhance track performance.
Beyond aerodynamics, Lamborghini has strategically shed weight and sharpened handling. The standard Urus’ air suspension is replaced with high-performance coil springs in the Performante, lowering the ride height by nearly an inch. While sharing a chassis with the Porsche Cayenne, the Urus boasts a longer wheelbase, approximately four inches more, contributing to its unique driving dynamics. The widened carbon fiber wheel arches hint at a broader stance, and our test Performante was equipped with optional 23-inch wheels and tires. Lamborghini also provided a set of 22-inch wheels paired with bespoke Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tires, which offered truly spectacular grip. Regardless of the tire setup, cornering grip was consistently impressive.
Power is certainly not lacking. Beneath the sculpted hood resides a potent 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine. This powerhouse churns out an impressive 657 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque, channeled to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission and an active torque vectoring system. The exhaust system features titanium components, producing a thrilling soundtrack under full throttle – a symphony of lightweight alloy and raw power.
Driving SUVs at insane speeds around a very fast race track may not sound like a good idea, but we’re here to tell you this Lamborghini Urus Performante is absolutely built for the job.
Speaking of power, the Lamborghini SUV 0-60 time is a staggering 3.1 seconds. This is half a second quicker than the original Urus we tested. Launch control ensures optimal power delivery, maximizing traction for those rapid starts. While it might not be labeled with the Huracan’s “Thrust Mode” moniker, the acceleration is relentless. On Roebling’s front straight, we clocked a quarter-mile time of 11.4 seconds at 121 mph, showcasing its phenomenal straight-line performance.
Gear shifts are executed with lightning-fast precision in automatic mode, and the paddle shifters offer engaging manual control. While the paddles might not feel as substantial as those in Lamborghini’s sports cars, they are remarkably responsive, allowing for smooth gear changes even mid-corner without disrupting the vehicle’s composure. The braking system of the Performante proved to be a standout feature during our track testing. Subjected to relentless hard braking over three days, the brakes exhibited no signs of fade or diminished performance. This is truly remarkable considering the vehicle’s near 5,000-lb weight. The ultra-grippy tires, however, did transmit every imperfection of the track surface during hard braking zones, a testament to their tenacious grip.
Visually, the brakes are equally impressive, featuring massive 17.3-inch carbon-ceramic discs up front clamped by substantial red 10-piston calipers, with 14.6-inch rotors at the rear. Beyond sheer capability, what truly impressed was the sheer fun factor of driving the Urus Performante on a racetrack. Unlike some high-performance SUVs that can feel like a chore on track, the Urus Performante strikes a perfect balance – engaging and exhilarating, yet with a comfortable interior.
Fuel economy figures are rated at 14 mpg city, 19 mpg highway, and 16 mpg combined.
And yes, the price tag reflects its exclusivity and performance – starting at $273,880. Despite the cost, the desire to own one is undeniable.
The Lamborghini Urus Performante transcends its track prowess, proving to be an exceptional SUV in diverse driving conditions, including off-pavement. While sharing some components with its German counterparts, the Urus Performante embodies Italian passion and driving flair, delivering a truly international and exhilarating driving experience.
