How to Program Your Genie Garage Door Opener to Your Car: 2028 Model and Beyond

Integrating your Genie garage door opener with your car’s built-in remote system offers unparalleled convenience. No more fumbling for a separate remote – with HomeLink or Car2U, you can control your garage door directly from your vehicle. These systems, typically featuring three buttons located on your visor or overhead console, operate using your car’s power, eliminating the need for batteries. Genie garage door openers are fully compatible with both HomeLink and Car2U. HomeLink systems are identifiable by a single LED indicator and often a house icon on the center button. Car2U systems have three LEDs, one above each button.

For detailed instructions in PDF format, please refer to the HomeLink Programming Guide. A helpful video tutorial is also available here.

Step 1: Clearing HomeLink Memory

Begin by clearing any previous programming from your HomeLink system. Press and hold the first and third buttons simultaneously. Keep holding until the HomeLink indicator light changes from a slow to a rapidly blinking light (approximately 20 seconds). Release both buttons.

NOTE: This step will erase all previously programmed devices from your HomeLink system.

Step 2: Training HomeLink with Your Genie Remote

Select the HomeLink button you wish to use for your Genie garage door opener. Position your Genie hand-held remote approximately two inches away from the chosen HomeLink button. Press and hold the button on your Genie remote. While still holding the Genie remote button, press and hold the selected HomeLink button. Continue holding both buttons until the HomeLink indicator light blinks slowly and then quickly. Once it blinks rapidly, release both buttons.

Step 3: Programming HomeLink to Your Genie Garage Door Opener

The programming process varies slightly depending on whether you have a newer or older Genie garage door opener model.

For Newer Genie Garage Door Openers with a Program Button:

  1. Locate the PROGRAM button on your Genie garage door opener powerhead. Press and hold this button until the round blue LED illuminates. Release the button. The long purple LED will start flashing.
  2. Press and hold the HomeLink button you programmed in Step 2 for two seconds, then release. Press the same HomeLink button again for two seconds and release. The long LED will flash blue and then turn off.
  3. Press the programmed HomeLink button several times until your garage door begins to move.

For Older Genie Garage Door Openers with a Learn Button:

  1. Locate the learn code button on your Genie garage door opener powerhead. Press and release this button. The red LED indicator will begin to blink.
  2. Press and release the desired HomeLink button one time. The red LED will stop blinking and remain illuminated.
  3. Press and release the same HomeLink button a second time. The red LED will turn off.
  4. Press the programmed HomeLink button again. Your garage door should now activate.

  2. Press and hold the Car2U button you’ve designated for your Genie opener for two seconds and release. Press the same button again for two seconds and release. The long LED will flash blue and then turn off.
  3. Press the Car2U button several more times until your garage door moves.

For Older Genie Models:

  3. Press the same Car2U button one more time. The red LED will turn off.
  4. Pressing the Car2U button again should now activate your garage door.

Step 3: Changing Factory Default Button for a Genie Opener (Car2U)

If you wish to use a button other than button 1 for your Genie opener (or if button 1 is not working as expected), follow these steps:

  1. Press and hold buttons 1 & 3 for ONE SECOND and release. All three LEDs will illuminate solid red.
  2. Press and hold the button you wish to reassign to Genie (button 2 or 3). The corresponding LED will flash. While continuing to hold this button, press and release button 1. Press and release button 1 again.
