How to Program Your Genie Intellicode Garage Door Opener to Your Car

Integrating your Genie garage door opener with your car’s built-in remote system offers unparalleled convenience and security. No more fumbling for a separate remote – with systems like HomeLink and Car2U, your garage door can be operated directly from your vehicle. These in-car technologies, typically found with three buttons located on your visor or overhead console, are powered by your car’s electrical system, eliminating the need for batteries and ensuring reliable operation every time you arrive home. Genie garage door openers are designed to be fully compatible with both HomeLink and Car2U, making the programming process straightforward.

HomeLink systems are identifiable by a single LED indicator and often feature a house icon on the center button. Car2U systems, on the other hand, have three LED lights positioned above each button. This guide will walk you through the simple steps to program both HomeLink and Car2U systems to your Genie garage door opener, enhancing your daily convenience and home security.

Programming Your HomeLink System to Your Genie Garage Door Opener

HomeLink is a widely used system for integrating garage door openers and other home automation devices into your vehicle. Programming your HomeLink system to your Genie opener is a simple process, broken down into three key steps.

Step 1: Clearing Your HomeLink System

Before programming a new garage door opener, it’s recommended to clear any previous programming from your HomeLink system. This ensures a clean slate for the new Genie opener signal.

To clear HomeLink, press and hold the first and third buttons simultaneously. Keep them pressed for approximately 20 seconds. Initially, the indicator light on the HomeLink system will blink slowly, then it will begin to blink rapidly. Once the rapid blinking starts, release both buttons. This indicates that the HomeLink system has been successfully cleared of previous settings.

Note: Clearing HomeLink will erase all previously programmed devices. If you have other devices programmed, you will need to reprogram them as well.

Step 2: Training HomeLink with Your Genie Remote

Next, you need to teach your HomeLink system to recognize the signal from your Genie garage door opener remote.

Choose the HomeLink button you wish to use for your Genie garage door opener. Take your Genie remote and position it close to the HomeLink button, ideally about two inches away. Press and hold the button on your Genie remote that you typically use to open your garage door. While holding the Genie remote button, immediately press and hold the chosen HomeLink button in your car. Continue holding both buttons simultaneously. Watch the indicator light on your HomeLink system. It will blink slowly at first, and then it will transition to a rapid blink. Once you see the rapid blinking, release both buttons. This rapid blinking signifies that the HomeLink system has successfully learned the frequency signal from your Genie remote.

Step 3: Programming HomeLink to Your Genie Opener Unit

The final step involves synchronizing your HomeLink system with the Genie garage door opener unit itself. The process varies slightly depending on whether you have a newer or older Genie model.

For Newer Genie Garage Door Openers (with a Program Button):

  1. Locate the PROGRAM button on your Genie garage door opener motor unit (powerhead). Press and hold this button until a round blue LED light turns ON. Once it’s lit, release the PROGRAM button. A long purple LED will then begin to flash, indicating the unit is in programming mode.
  2. Inside your car, press and hold the HomeLink button you programmed in Step 2 for two seconds and then release. Repeat this process one more time – press the same HomeLink button for two seconds and release again.
  3. Observe the long LED on the garage door opener unit. It should flash blue and then turn off.
  4. To finalize the programming, press the HomeLink button in your car again a few times. Your garage door should now activate, confirming successful programming.

For Older Genie Garage Door Openers (with a Learn Button):

  1. Locate the learn code button (often referred to as “Learn Button”) on your Genie garage door opener powerhead. Press and release this button. A red LED light will start blinking, indicating it’s in learning mode.
  2. Immediately press the desired HomeLink button in your car one time. The red LED on the garage door opener should stop blinking and remain on steadily.
  3. Press the same HomeLink button in your car one more time. The red LED on the garage door opener should now turn off.
  4. Press the HomeLink button again. Your Genie garage door should now operate, indicating successful programming.

Programming Your Car2U System to Your Genie Garage Door Opener

Car2U is another in-car system compatible with Genie garage door openers. Similar to HomeLink, programming Car2U involves a straightforward process to link your car to your garage door opener.

Step 1: Resetting Car2U to Factory Default Settings

Before programming Car2U with your Genie opener, resetting it to its default factory settings is advisable. Car2U comes with pre-set defaults for each button: Button 1 is typically set for Genie openers, Button 2 for LiftMaster, and Button 3 for Wayne Dalton. However, resetting ensures a clean programming process.

Note: Resetting Car2U will erase all previously programmed garage door openers.

Step 2: Programming Car2U to Your Genie Opener Unit

The programming steps for Car2U are similar to HomeLink and also depend on the model of your Genie garage door opener.

For Newer Genie Models (with a Program Button):

  1. Locate the PROGRAM button on your Genie garage door opener powerhead. Press and hold it until the round blue LED turns ON, then release the button. The long purple LED will start flashing.
  2. Press and hold the Car2U button you want to use for your Genie opener for two seconds and release. Repeat this – press the same Car2U button again for two seconds and release.
  3. The long LED on the garage door opener should flash blue and then turn off.
  4. Press the Car2U button a few more times to test. The garage door should now operate.

For Older Genie Models (with a Learn Button):

  1. Press and release the learn code button on your Genie opener powerhead. The red LED will begin to blink.
  2. Press the desired Car2U button one time. The red LED will stop blinking and stay illuminated.
  3. Press the same Car2U button one more time. The red LED will turn off.
  4. Press the Car2U button again to test. Your garage door should now activate.

Step 3: Changing a Car2U Factory Default Button for a Genie Opener

If you wish to use a Car2U button that is not Button 1 (the default Genie button) for your Genie opener, you can easily change the button assignment.

  1. Press and hold buttons 1 and 3 for just ONE SECOND and then release. All three LEDs above the Car2U buttons will light up solid red.
  2. Decide which button (2 or 3) you want to reprogram for your Genie opener. Press and hold that button. The LED above that button will start to flash. While still holding this button down, press and release button 1, and then press and release button 1 again.
  3. Release the button you held down in step 2 and wait for the LED to stop flashing. This button is now programmed for your Genie opener. Repeat this step if you want to program another Car2U button for a second Genie opener.
