How to Program Your Genie Garage Door Opener to Your Lexus Car

Integrating your Genie garage door opener with your Lexus vehicle’s built-in remote system offers unparalleled convenience. Imagine arriving home and, with just the press of a button inside your car, effortlessly opening your garage door. No more fumbling for a separate remote! Vehicles like Lexus often come equipped with integrated systems like HomeLink or Car2U, designed to communicate with devices like garage door openers. This guide will walk you through the simple steps to program your Genie garage door opener to your Lexus car, ensuring smooth, keyless entry every time.

Understanding In-Car Garage Door Opener Systems: HomeLink and Car2U

Before we dive into programming, let’s understand the two common in-car systems you might find in your Lexus: HomeLink and Car2U. Both serve the same primary function – allowing you to control your garage door without a handheld remote – but they are distinguished by their appearance and origin.

HomeLink: Typically found on the visor or overhead console of your Lexus, HomeLink systems are characterized by a single LED indicator, often accompanied by a house icon above the center button. A key advantage of HomeLink is its power source; it runs directly from your car’s electrical system, eliminating the need for batteries.

Car2U: Similar to HomeLink, Car2U is an in-car system but is identifiable by three LED lights positioned above each of the three buttons. Like HomeLink, Car2U is also powered by your vehicle.

Both HomeLink and Car2U are compatible with Genie garage door openers, making the programming process straightforward. Let’s explore how to program each system.

Programming Your Genie Opener with HomeLink in Your Lexus

Here’s how to program your Genie garage door opener to a HomeLink system in your Lexus.

Step 1: Clear HomeLink

First, you’ll want to clear any previous programming from your HomeLink system. This ensures a clean slate for programming your Genie opener.

  1. Press and hold down the first and third buttons on your HomeLink system simultaneously.
  2. Continue holding until the indicator light blinks slowly and then rapidly. This should take about 20 seconds.
  3. Release both buttons. Your HomeLink system is now cleared.

NOTE: Clearing HomeLink will erase all previously programmed devices.

Step 2: Train HomeLink with Your Genie Remote

Next, you need to teach your HomeLink system to recognize the signal from your Genie garage door opener remote.

  1. Choose the HomeLink button you want to use for your Genie garage door.
  2. Hold your Genie remote approximately two inches away from the chosen HomeLink button.
  3. Press and hold the button on your Genie remote.
  4. While still holding the Genie remote button, press and hold the selected HomeLink button in your Lexus.
  5. Keep both buttons pressed until the HomeLink indicator light changes from a slow blink to a rapid blink.
  6. Once the rapid blinking begins, release both buttons.

Step 3: Program HomeLink to the Genie Opener

The final step involves synchronizing your HomeLink system with your Genie garage door opener unit. The process varies slightly depending on whether you have a newer or older Genie opener model.

For Newer Genie Garage Door Openers (with a Program Button):

  1. Locate the PROGRAM button on your Genie garage door opener’s powerhead (the motor unit in the garage). Press and hold this button until a round blue LED illuminates. Release the button. A long purple LED will start flashing.
  2. Press and hold the programmed HomeLink button in your Lexus for two seconds, then release. Repeat this press and release sequence a second time. The long LED on your Genie opener will flash blue and then turn off.
  3. Press the HomeLink button in your Lexus a few more times until your garage door begins to move.

For Older Genie Garage Door Openers (with a Learn Button):

  1. Find the learn code button on your Genie garage door opener powerhead. Press and release this button. A red LED will begin to blink.
  2. Press and release the programmed HomeLink button in your Lexus one time. The red LED on the opener will stop blinking and remain on.
  3. Press and release the HomeLink button in your Lexus a second time. The red LED will turn off.
  4. Press the HomeLink button again. Your garage door should now activate.

  4. Press the Car2U button again to activate your garage door.

Step 3: Changing Factory Default Button for a Genie Opener (Car2U)

If you wish to change a Car2U button that is set to a different default opener (like LiftMaster or Wayne Dalton) to operate your Genie opener, follow these steps:

  1. Press and hold buttons 1 & 3 on your Car2U system for ONE SECOND and release. All three LEDs will light up solid red.
  2. Press and hold the button (2 or 3) you want to change to Genie. The corresponding LED will flash. While continuing to hold this button, press and release button 1, and then press and release button 1 again.
  3. Release the button you held in step 2 and wait for the LED to stop flashing. This button is now programmed for your Genie opener. Repeat Step 2 if you want to program another Car2U button for a second Genie opener.
