Genesis is electrifying the performance car scene with its newly launched sub-brand, Magma, a direct competitor to established names like Mercedes-AMG and BMW M. The first model to emerge from this fiery division is the highly anticipated Gv60 Magma, signaling a bold step into high-performance electric vehicles without sacrificing the luxury and comfort Genesis is known for.
Drawing inspiration from the Earth’s molten core, the Magma sub-brand promises an elevated driving experience, blending exhilarating power with sophisticated aesthetics. While Genesis has confirmed that the Magma treatment will eventually extend to its entire vehicle lineup, the GV60 Magma is set to lead the charge, debuting in 2025 and expected to hit the U.S. market as a 2026 model. Details on the rollout of other Magma models remain eagerly awaited.
The design direction for the GV60 Magma was first previewed as a striking concept at the 2024 New York Auto Show, offering a tantalizing glimpse into what enthusiasts can expect. Spy shots of prototypes undergoing testing reveal heavy camouflage, yet key design elements from the concept are discernible, including the distinctive diamond mesh pattern on the lower front intakes. Echoing the concept’s aggressive styling, the prototypes also sport prominent roof fins and a carbon fiber rear wing spoiler, hinting at enhanced aerodynamic performance. Upgraded wheels and brakes further underscore the performance-focused nature of the GV60 Magma.

In terms of power, the standard Genesis GV60 Performance already boasts an impressive 483 horsepower with a 10-second Boost mode. However, the GV60 Magma is anticipated to rival the performance figures of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, which delivers up to 641 hp with its N Grin Boost feature. Rumors even suggest the GV60 Magma could potentially exceed 700 hp, placing it firmly in high-performance territory.
Ash Corson, head of Genesis product planning for North America, has indicated that the GV60 Magma will distinguish itself from the Ioniq 5 N through a more intense and refined sound profile, along with a continued emphasis on balancing exhilarating performance with Genesis’ hallmark comfort. This suggests the GV60 Magma aims to deliver a performance-oriented experience that is both thrilling and luxurious.
Powering the GV60 Magma is expected to be the same advanced 84-kwh battery pack found in the updated standard GV60, also slated for a 2026 model year release. The updated GV60 showcases subtle refinements in both exterior and interior styling, alongside the introduction of the new, higher capacity battery.
Genesis’ commitment to the Magma sub-brand is further solidified by the establishment of the Genesis Magma Racing team. This racing division is actively developing an LMDh race car, set to compete against prestigious marques like Porsche and Ferrari in top-tier events such as the FIA World Endurance Championship and IMSA United SportsCar Championship. Interestingly, Genesis has also confirmed that the Magma line will not be exclusively electric, with plans to incorporate high-performance hybrid technology into future models, demonstrating a versatile approach to performance enhancement across its range. The GV60 Magma is just the beginning of an exciting chapter for Genesis, promising a future where performance and luxury seamlessly converge.
