Integrating your car’s HomeLink system with your Genie garage door opener offers unparalleled convenience. Imagine effortlessly opening your garage door as you arrive home without fumbling for a remote. HomeLink and Car2U are in-vehicle wireless control systems designed to do just that, and they are compatible with Genie garage door openers. These systems, typically found with three buttons located on your car’s visor or overhead console, operate directly from your car’s power, eliminating the need for batteries. Cars equipped with HomeLink are identified by a single LED indicator and often a house icon above the center button, while Car2U systems have three LEDs, one above each button. This guide will walk you through programming both HomeLink and Car2U to your Genie garage door opener, ensuring a smooth and efficient setup.
Programming Your HomeLink System to a Genie Garage Door Opener
For detailed instructions in PDF format, you can refer to the official HomeLink programming guide. A helpful video tutorial is also available here.
Step 1: Clear Existing HomeLink Programming
Before programming a new garage door opener, it’s recommended to clear any previous settings. To do this, press and hold the first and third HomeLink buttons simultaneously. Keep holding until the HomeLink indicator light changes from a slow to a rapidly flashing blink. This process usually takes about 20 seconds. Once the indicator blinks rapidly, release both buttons.
Note: Clearing HomeLink will erase all previously programmed devices.
Step 2: Train HomeLink with Your Genie Remote Control
Select the HomeLink button you wish to program for your Genie garage door opener. Position your Genie remote control approximately two inches away from the chosen HomeLink button in your car. Press and hold the button on your Genie remote. While still holding the Genie remote button, press and hold the selected HomeLink button at the same time. Continue holding both buttons until the HomeLink indicator light transitions from a slow blink to a fast blink. Once it blinks rapidly, release both buttons.
Step 3: Program HomeLink to your Genie Garage Door Opener
The next steps vary slightly depending on whether you have a newer or older Genie garage door opener model.
For Newer Genie Garage Door Openers with a “Program” Button:
- Locate the “PROGRAM” button on the powerhead unit of your Genie garage door opener. Press and hold this button until the round blue LED illuminates. Release the button. The long purple LED will then start flashing.
- Press and hold the HomeLink button you programmed in Step 2 for two seconds, and then release. Repeat this press and release sequence one more time. The long LED indicator on the garage door opener will flash blue and then turn off.
- Press the programmed HomeLink button a few more times to test if your garage door activates. The door should now respond to your HomeLink button.
For Older Genie Garage Door Openers with a “Learn” Button:
- Find the “learn code” button on your Genie garage door opener’s powerhead. Press and release this button. A red LED indicator will begin to blink.
- Immediately press the HomeLink button you programmed in Step 2 once. The red LED on the garage door opener will stop blinking and remain on.
- Press the same HomeLink button one more time. The red LED will turn off.
- Press the HomeLink button again to test. Your Genie garage door should now open or close when you press the programmed HomeLink button.
