Can I Program Any Remote to My Aftermarket Car Alarm System?

Last night was a wake-up call. My car was broken into, and they took off with all my tools. Beyond the frustration of the theft, it’s made me seriously rethink my car’s security. I’m exploring various options, and the most pressing question I have right now is: can I use an OEM remote fob with an aftermarket car alarm/door lock system?

I know it might seem like a minor inconvenience to carry an extra key fob, especially since I prefer the traditional key-in-the-door approach. However, the reality is that older Honda lock cylinders are vulnerable. To enhance my car’s security, I’m considering disabling the lock cylinders completely. This would necessitate a wireless door unlocking system. Luckily, I’ve already installed power door locks, but the factory power door lock unit doesn’t have wireless capabilities. My ideal solution would be an aftermarket wireless kit that’s compatible with an OEM key fob, specifically the integrated style for a cleaner look and feel.

However, it seems Honda only adopted the integrated key and remote style after transitioning to newer, harder-to-copy key blanks. This might not align with disabling my key cylinders as initially planned. Perhaps a flip-key style aftermarket system, while maybe not as sleek as an OEM integrated fob, could be a more practical and readily available solution.

Beyond the remote question, I’m also planning several other security enhancements:

  1. Kill Switch: They popped my hood, likely checking for aftermarket performance parts. Even though my car is stock, they might return. A kill switch adds another layer of protection against theft of the entire vehicle.
  2. Door Latch Shielding: Preventing “slim jim” entry by covering the door latches is another crucial step to bolster physical security.
  3. Wireless Proximity Alert: I’m considering a low-tech driveway alarm system wired to the car to alert me if someone approaches, or a more advanced Wi-Fi connected system that sends alerts to my phone.

My neighbors mentioned seeing a black Civic with a loud exhaust around 3:30 AM last night. At least I have a description to be aware of. It’s time to take proactive steps to secure my car and hopefully prevent future incidents.
