A pioneering collaboration between the University of Vermont Medical Center and Hudson Headwaters Health Network is set to significantly expand access to crucial preventive dental care in northern New York. This strategic partnership broadens the reach of the Medical Center’s esteemed Dental Residency Program, injecting new energy and resources into rural communities across the Adirondacks. Leaders from both organizations emphasize that this innovative preventive care dental program is a partnership between the academic expertise of a leading medical center and the community-focused approach of a Federally Qualified Health Center, ultimately aiming to improve oral health outcomes and bolster dentist recruitment in underserved areas.
Rural communities often face significant hurdles in accessing consistent and comprehensive dental services. Geographic isolation, workforce shortages, and economic factors can create substantial barriers to preventive care, leading to poorer oral health outcomes and increased overall healthcare costs. Recognizing these challenges, the University of Vermont Medical Center and Hudson Headwaters Health Network have joined forces to address the pressing need for expanded dental services in rural New York.
This innovative preventive dental care partnership integrates Hudson Headwaters’ Warrensburg, NY dental center as a vital training site within the UVM Medical Center’s Dental Residency Program. This marks a significant milestone as the program’s first training site located within New York State, extending its impact beyond Vermont and directly into the heart of the Adirondack region. By embedding resident dentists within a community health setting, the program ensures they gain invaluable experience in addressing the unique dental needs of rural populations.
“We are thrilled to expand our Dental Residency Program and offer our residents richer, more diverse experiences in delivering essential dental care and services,” stated Dr. Justin Hurlburt, Program Director of UVM Medical Center’s Dental Residency Program. “Integrating a training site at Hudson Headwaters provides our residents with the unique opportunity to engage with a different patient demographic, manage a broader spectrum of cases, and ultimately extend our reach to help even more individuals in need of quality dental care.” This hands-on experience in a rural setting is crucial in shaping well-rounded dentists prepared to tackle diverse challenges in their future careers.
From Hudson Headwaters’ perspective, this partnership directly addresses a long-standing need to enhance preventive dental care access within their service areas. “Our collaboration with UVM Medical Center represents an encouraging and impactful step towards meeting the escalating demands for dental care throughout our region,” explained Dr. Erin Thompson, Lead Dental Provider at Hudson Headwaters. “The addition of resident dentists significantly strengthens our capacity to deliver high-quality care, and we are eager for our patients to experience the tangible benefits of this expanded access to dental services.” This influx of dental professionals, even on a rotational basis, can make a substantial difference in reducing wait times and increasing appointment availability for patients in these communities.
The foundation of this new initiative is built upon a strong history of collaboration between the University of Vermont Health Network and Hudson Headwaters. Both organizations share a commitment to community health and recognize the importance of working together to address healthcare disparities in rural settings. This partnership exemplifies a proactive approach to tackling systemic challenges and leveraging collective expertise to create meaningful change.
“As an academic health system deeply committed to serving a large, rural landscape, we consider it a core responsibility to educate the next generation of clinicians while simultaneously demonstrating the rewards and unique opportunities of practicing in rural communities,” emphasized Dr. Jason Sanders, President and CEO of University of Vermont Medical Group and Executive Vice President and Chief Physician Officer for University of Vermont Health Network. “This preventive care dental program partnership with Hudson Headwaters is yet another example of our health system’s innovative approach to addressing persistent challenges that directly impact the health and well-being of individuals across both Vermont and northern New York.” By exposing residents to the realities and rewards of rural practice, the program hopes to encourage more dentists to consider establishing their careers in these underserved areas after graduation.
Hudson Headwaters warmly welcomed the first cohort of five resident dentists from UVM Medical Center’s program to their Warrensburg dental center earlier this month. These inaugural residents, bringing diverse backgrounds and training, are: Raquel Alespeiti, DMD; Callan Bock, DDS; Reegan DeBruycker, DDS; Christian Jocham, DDS; and Emily Lewis, DMD. Their presence will not only augment the clinical capacity of the Warrensburg site but also bring fresh perspectives and enthusiasm to the patient care environment.
“We extend a warm welcome to the UVM Medical Center resident dentists and sincerely hope they will witness firsthand the profoundly rewarding career and positive community impact they can achieve by choosing to serve our rural communities,” added Dr. Thompson. This experience is designed to be mutually beneficial, providing residents with valuable clinical training while simultaneously bolstering access to much-needed dental care for rural residents.
Hudson Headwaters has a long-standing commitment to providing dental care to the Warrensburg community, offering services since 2005 regardless of insurance status or ability to pay. Their dedication to expanding access further includes the Healthy Smiles program, a mobile preventive dental service that reaches children in over 60 local schools. Welcoming dental residents is the latest significant step in Hudson Headwaters’ ongoing efforts to enhance and expand dental services for the communities they serve.
