How to Program Your Genie Garage Door Opener to Your Car

Integrating your car’s built-in remote system with your Genie garage door opener offers unparalleled convenience. No more fumbling for a separate remote – with systems like HomeLink and Car2U, opening your garage door is as simple as pressing a button in your car. These in-car technologies are designed for ease of use and powered directly by your vehicle, eliminating the need for batteries. Genie garage door openers are widely compatible with both HomeLink and Car2U, making your daily comings and goings smoother.

HomeLink systems are typically identified by a single LED indicator and often feature a house icon on the central button. Car2U systems, on the other hand, are recognizable by three LED lights positioned above each button. Both systems offer a seamless way to control your garage door, enhancing your home access experience.

Programming Your HomeLink® System for Genie Garage Doors

For detailed instructions in PDF format, you can refer to the official HomeLink programming guide. A helpful video tutorial is also available here.

Step 1: Clearing Existing HomeLink Programming

To begin programming your HomeLink system with your Genie garage door opener, it’s recommended to clear any previous programming. This ensures a clean slate for the new settings.

  1. Press and hold the first and third buttons on your HomeLink system simultaneously.
  2. Keep holding until the indicator light on the HomeLink starts to blink slowly, and then rapidly. This should take approximately 20 seconds.
  3. Once the indicator blinks rapidly, release both buttons. Your HomeLink system is now cleared and ready for programming.

NOTE: Clearing HomeLink will erase all previously programmed devices, including any existing garage door openers.

Step 2: Training HomeLink with Your Genie Remote Control

This step involves teaching your HomeLink system to recognize the signal from your Genie garage door remote.

  1. Select the HomeLink button you wish to use for your Genie garage door.
  2. Position your Genie garage door remote approximately two inches away from the chosen HomeLink button.
  3. Press and hold the button on your Genie remote that you typically use to open your garage door.
  4. While still holding the Genie remote button, immediately press and hold the selected HomeLink button.
  5. Continue holding both buttons until the HomeLink indicator light changes from a slow to a rapidly blinking light.
  6. Once the rapid blinking begins, release both buttons. HomeLink has now learned the frequency from your Genie remote.

Step 3: Programming HomeLink to Your Genie Garage Door Opener

The final step involves syncing your HomeLink system with your Genie garage door opener unit. The process varies slightly depending on whether you have a newer or older Genie model.

For Newer Genie Garage Door Openers (with a Program Button):

Newer Genie openers are equipped with a “Program” button, typically located on the powerhead unit of the opener in your garage.

  1. Locate the PROGRAM button on your Genie garage door opener’s powerhead. Press and hold this button until a round blue LED light turns ON. Then, release the button. A long purple LED will start flashing.
  2. Press and hold the HomeLink button you programmed in Step 2 for two seconds, and then release. Repeat this press and release sequence one more time (press for two seconds, release).
  3. Observe the long LED light on your Genie opener. It should flash blue and then turn off.
  4. Press the programmed HomeLink button a few more times. Your Genie garage door should now activate and move. If it doesn’t respond immediately, continue pressing the HomeLink button intermittently until the door operates.

For Older Genie Garage Door Openers (with a Learn Button):

Older Genie models usually have a “Learn Code” or “Learn” button instead of a “Program” button.

  1. Find the learn code button on your Genie garage door opener’s powerhead. Press and release this button. A red LED light will begin to blink.
  2. Immediately press the HomeLink button you programmed in Step 2 one time. The red LED light on the opener should stop blinking and remain on steadily.
  3. Press the same HomeLink button one more time. The red LED light should now turn off.
  4. Press the HomeLink button again. Your Genie garage door should now open or close. If it doesn’t activate on the first press, try pressing the HomeLink button again.

NOTE: For further assistance, consult your vehicle’s owner’s manual, visit HomeLink’s official website, or the Genie Company website.

  4. Press the Car2U button again. Your Genie garage door should now activate.

  1. Press and hold buttons 1 and 3 on your Car2U system for ONE SECOND and release. All three LEDs will light up solid red.
  2. Press and hold the button you want to change to control your Genie opener (either button 2 or 3). The corresponding LED for that button will start flashing. While still holding this button, press and release button 1, and then press and release button 1 again.
  3. Release the button you are holding from step 2 and wait for the LED to stop flashing. This button is now programmed for your Genie opener. Repeat this step if you want to program another Car2U button for a second Genie opener.
