How to Program Your Genie ProMax Garage Door Opener to Your Car

Integrating your Genie ProMax garage door opener with your car’s built-in remote system, such as HomeLink or Car2U, offers unparalleled convenience. Imagine effortlessly opening your garage door as you arrive home without fumbling for a separate remote. These in-car systems, typically found as three buttons on your visor or overhead console, are powered by your vehicle’s electrical system, eliminating the need for batteries. Genie garage door openers are designed to be compatible with both HomeLink and Car2U. HomeLink systems are often recognized by a single LED indicator and a house icon on the center button, while Car2U systems feature three LEDs, one above each button. This guide will provide you with step-by-step instructions to program your Genie ProMax opener to either of these systems, ensuring a seamless entry every time you arrive home.

Programming Your Genie Garage Door Opener with HomeLink®

For detailed instructions in PDF format, you can refer to the HomeLink Programming Guide. A helpful video tutorial is also available here.

Step 1: Clear Existing HomeLink Programming

Before programming a new garage door opener, it’s recommended to clear any previous settings from your HomeLink system. To do this, press and hold the outer two HomeLink buttons (usually button 1 and button 3) simultaneously. Keep holding them until the indicator light on the HomeLink system starts to blink slowly and then rapidly. This process usually takes about 20 seconds. Once the indicator blinks rapidly, release both buttons. This reset ensures a clean slate for programming your Genie opener.

Step 2: Train HomeLink with Your Genie Handheld Remote

Next, you need to synchronize your car’s HomeLink system with your Genie garage door opener remote. Begin by selecting the HomeLink button you wish to use for your Genie opener. Position your Genie remote approximately two inches away from the chosen HomeLink button. Press and hold the button on your Genie remote that you typically use to open your garage door. While still holding the Genie remote button, press and hold the selected HomeLink button in your car. Continue to hold both buttons until the HomeLink indicator light changes from a slow blink to a rapid blink. Once it blinks rapidly, release both buttons. This step transmits the frequency signal from your Genie remote to your car’s HomeLink system.

Step 3: Program HomeLink to Your Genie Garage Door Opener

The final step involves teaching your Genie garage door opener to recognize the signal from your car’s HomeLink system. The procedure varies slightly depending on whether you have a newer or older Genie model.

  • For Newer Genie Garage Door Openers with a “Program” Button (typically blue or purple):

    1. Locate the “PROGRAM” button on the powerhead unit of your Genie garage door opener. Press and hold this button until a round blue LED light turns ON. Then, release the button. A long purple LED will start flashing, indicating the opener is in programming mode.
    2. Press and hold the HomeLink button in your car that you programmed in Step 2 for two seconds, and then release. Repeat this process one more time – press and hold the same HomeLink button for two seconds and release. The long LED on the garage door opener will flash blue and then turn off, indicating successful signal reception.
    3. Test the programming by pressing the programmed HomeLink button again. Your garage door should now activate. If it doesn’t, you may need to repeat steps 2 and 3. You might need to press the HomeLink button a few times for the door to respond during the initial programming.
  • For Older Genie Garage Door Openers with a “Learn” Button (often red or yellow):

    1. Find the “learn code” button on your Genie garage door opener motor unit. Press and release this button. A red LED indicator light will begin to blink, signaling that the opener is ready to learn a new code.
    2. Immediately press the desired HomeLink button in your car one time. The red LED on the garage door opener will stop blinking and remain continuously ON.
    3. Press the same HomeLink button in your car a second time. The red LED on the garage door opener will turn OFF. This confirms the signal has been learned.
    4. Press the programmed HomeLink button once more to test. Your garage door should now open or close. If not, repeat steps 2 and 3.

    1. Locate the “learn code” button on your Genie garage door opener powerhead. Press and release this button. The red LED will start blinking.
    2. Press the desired Car2U button one time. The red LED will stop blinking and stay on continuously.
    3. Press the same Car2U button one more time. The red LED will turn off.
    4. Test the programming by pressing the Car2U button again. Your garage door should now operate.

Step 3: Changing a Factory Default Car2U Button for a Genie Opener

If you wish to use a Car2U button that is not Button 1 (the default Genie button), you can reassign button 2 or 3 for your Genie opener.

  1. Press and hold Car2U buttons 1 and 3 simultaneously for just ONE SECOND and release. All three LED lights will illuminate solid red.
  2. Now, press and hold the button you want to change to control your Genie opener (either button 2 or 3). The LED above the button you are holding will start to flash. While continuing to hold this button, press and release button 1. Press and release button 1 again.
  3. Release the button you held in step 2 and wait for the LED to stop flashing. This button is now programmed for your Genie opener. You can repeat Step 2 to program a second Car2U button for another Genie opener if needed.
