Keyless entry remotes offer convenience and security for your Honda vehicle. Programming a new or replacement remote can seem daunting, but it’s often a straightforward process you can complete yourself at home. This guide provides clear, step-by-step instructions on how to program your Honda car remote, saving you time and potentially costly dealership fees. Make sure you have all your remotes for the vehicle present before starting. Ensure all doors and the rear hatch or trunk are completely closed throughout the programming procedure. You only need one remote to initiate the programming mode, but all remotes must be programmed during a single session. Each step must be performed within 5 seconds of the previous one.
-
Begin by sitting inside your Honda with all doors and the trunk tightly shut.
-
Insert your key into the ignition and turn it to the “ON” position (position “II” on the ignition bezel) until the dashboard lights illuminate. Within 5 seconds of turning the key to “ON”, press and hold the “Lock” button on one of your remotes for approximately one second, then release.
-
Turn the ignition key to the “OFF” position (position “I” on the ignition bezel), causing the dashboard lights to turn off.
-
Repeat steps 2 and 3 a total of three more times, for a cumulative of four times. Remember, each step must be completed within 5 seconds of the preceding step.
-
On the fourth turn of the key to the “ON” position, immediately press the “Lock” button on one of your remotes. You should hear the car locks cycle, producing a “clunk” sound. Note that the doors will not actually lock or unlock at this stage; this sound simply indicates that the system has entered programming mode. Do not turn the key off at this point.
-
Within 5 seconds of entering programming mode, and then within 5 seconds of each subsequent remote, press the “Lock” button on each remote you wish to program. Press and hold the button for about a second, then release. This entire step needs to be completed within 10 seconds. Each successful remote programming should be indicated by the locks cycling again. You can program up to three remotes.
-
Finally, turn the ignition key completely to the “OFF” position and remove the key from the ignition. Exit your Honda and close the door. Your remotes should now be programmed and fully functional. If your remote includes a trunk or hatch release button, remember that you typically need to press and hold this button for a few seconds to activate the trunk or hatch release.
